Description
For your consideration, an antique Japanese lacquer cigarette box set featuring an intricate ajiro (bamboo strip) woven basketry exterior and silver fan-shaped top inlays.
Pieces like this are famously crafted in the style of or by Japanese master metalworkers and lacquer artists like Nagata Tomijiro (Ikkakusai).
Fine hand-woven bamboo strips coated with defensive lacquer, matched with a black lacquered interior and an inlay of silver or shibuichi (a silver-copper alloy) incised with traditional foliage or landscape motifs.
Typically originates from the late Meiji period (1868–1912) or the Taisho period.
Originally designed as a smoking accessory set, the lidded box holds cigarettes and sits nested on its matching woven lacquer tray.
