Description
For your consideration, Japanese decorative lacquer dish (飾皿 – kazarizara) or tray, attributed to the notable lacquer master Takai Tairei (高井泰令, 1880–1971). The artist’s distinctive signature is visible in gold maki-e on the lower-right quadrant of the surface.
Style and Technique
The artwork is executed in maki-e (蒔絵), the traditional Japanese technique of sprinkling gold and metallic powders onto wet lacquer.
Tairei has utilized a heavily textured surface technique—frequently referred to as ishime-ji (stone-texture ground) or a varied kawari-nuri—giving the dish an organic, earthy bronze and gold tone reminiscent of weathered surfaces or specialized patinas.
The composition showcases dynamic, swirling Rinpa-style waves alongside a legendary creature emerging from the dark water currents. The raised detailing (takamaki-e) and fine line control illustrate Tairei’s training under Ikeda Taishin, a celebrated pupil of the legendary master Shibata Zeshin. Stamped “IMAOKA GD LTD. MADE IN JAPAN” on the back.
