Traditional Japanese Chochin lanterns are typically designed to be collapsible, featuring a washi paper body stretched over a bamboo framework.
Similar antique items have been dated to the late 19th-century Meiji era (1850–1900) or early 20th century.
These lanterns were originally designed to be portable or handheld, often used for lighting streets or during festivals, and sometimes feature family crests.
