Description
For your consideration, a vintage Phillips 66 5-gallon metal gas or oil container, manufactured by the Butler Manufacturing Company around the 1930s to 1950s.
It features the iconic Phillips highway shield outline stamped onto the side.
The bottom band lists the capacity as “5 US GALLONS / 18.925 LITERS”. Similar Butler Manufacturing models feature an embossed “5 Gallon Standard Measure” on the upper lid or side body.
It retains its original wire bail handle with a central wooden grip, a threaded main filler neck, and a separate small vent cap.
Cans like this are highly sought after in the Petroleum / Automobilia collector community. While the original red, white, and black painted graphics have heavily weathered away to a uniform rustic orange-brown patina, it remains structurally solid. Collectors typically value these as rustic decor for garages, barns, or “man caves”
